Anyone with $250,000 to spare can buy an unusual New Year present from a Japanese department store: a “fukubukuro”, or lucky bag, stuffed with expensive jewellery.

The bag, a feature of New Year in Japan, will go on sale on January 2. It will cost Y20 million ($259,000).

The fukubukuro usually sell as surprises. Buyers generally do not know the exact content, but it is widely understood that it is more expensive than what it was paid for it.

The Okajima Department Store in Kofu announced that the bag contains three pieces of jewellery – two platinum rings and a pendant – which would normally cost Y50 million.

"We hope it will lift spirits for the New Year," said an official of the store.
