Japanese Architecture is fascinating and a current inspirational resource for my own work. These are photographs of my favourite buildings situated in Tokyo. (Photos by Carlo Fumarola taken between 2008 and 2010)

This is a fair answer to those who say that Japanese people are not creative! There's no one better in creating such futuristic but actually comfortable environment, they're unbeatable.

true. the classic modern architecture movement in europe and usa actually was influenced by japanese architecture in the first place. frank lloyd wright, bruno taut and other architecture pioneers admit that they were inspired by the timeless design and the quite modern spirit of the old japanese house.

speaking of old japanese houses, have you ever seen houses of Shirakawa-go? their roofs survive taifoos of extreme power but the construction is amazingly simple and natural.

of course, the massive roof element has a functional purpose and in the mean time an expressive strength. The Katsura Villa in Kyoto has similar roof typologies. By the way, that Villa is a must see!!

I highly doubt that "not creative" is a common description for Japanese people =D

I actually second you. In fact, I think Japanese people are one of the most creative and unique people in terms of art & imagination.

I didn't say it's a common description but I know a lot of people who consider Japanese as a nation that is perfect in copying and upgrading things found abroad but unable to create them by their own. but actually even an adaptation or upgrade require imagination and creativity.

One of the most iconic building for "strange" design. But it is lovely when it is actually clean.

yes, thanks. of course the list is far from being complete. let' s say that these objects are my favourites.(except for the latest building of kurokawa, which if find quite postmodern and a deception after having erected such a beautiful building like the capsule tower)
