Sky Deck in Mori Tower
Seeing what interesting pictures people take from Sky Deck I decided to try it for myself.
Originally the plan was to arrive before sunset and get some nice sunset pictures, but that did not work too good due to some mistakes in travel time calculations and we arrived too late.
It also turned out that you cannot bring a tripod with you to the Sky Deck, and argument over this also took some time.
Finally up at the deck and the sun is not there anymore :(
Of course there is a tripod standing in the very good location that turned out to be commercial photographer selling people their pictures with Tokyo view.
Also the rails at the edge of the platform are mostly round so it's hard to stably put a camera on that, there are some square pieces where different sections connect, but they are few and often already busy.

Just went up, and the sun had already set, sigh.

So finally, could you go on the deck with your tripod?
if not what did you do to get on a deck without?
good shots!

Thanks!
No tripod for us, they took it away at the 53F before the final elevator (they have lockers there where all disallowed items (== everything but cameras and purses) go). The tripod does not fit into a locker so they just put it onto a cart near an attendant and we claimed it on the way back.

Waaa so how did you take that photo ? It's a long expose shot right ? Btw how can you go to that building ?

Well, I was lucky to get access to one of the rectangular pieces of the railing. Also with a big camera you can try to rest it a piece of railing where it changes direction and forms sort of a triangle.
Another trick I tried is to rest camera against observation tubes (if you center it right above support, it becomes somewhat easy to make it static for some time).
Finally, they also have those bendable barriers (kind of like in airports), you can actually detach one of the points and rest your camera on that (I did this, nobody said a word).
I also tried to ask them to use their tripod, but that was not allowed.
Finally, I have another idea that I plan to use next time, there is this useful thing called "super clamp" that can attach to various objects. I plan to use that next time since it's pretty small and I can just hide it in my photo bag.

Ah, forgot to say that access to the building is from Roppongi station.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3031.html is the directions I used.
We walked from Azabujuban station, but it seems the map was not scaled correctly and Roppongi station is much closer.
Once you are there, just follow signs for Observation deck and then once you are at the top, pay some extra money and go to the Sky Deck (the observation deck is useless for photography mostly due to all the reflections from the glass, though the views from there are more interesting, you can see all the way down, as nothing obstructs the view)

the observation deck isn't totally useless. you just need to cover a portion of the glass to block out the reflections, or butt your lens up against the glass. plus the window sill provides a great flat surface to work with! but I still wish i went on the sky deck...too bad i didn't have the money for it at the time.

Right, it's not totally useless during the day on the side (if you don't have sun or some other really bright source of light in frame)
In the night it is totally useless because even if you press the lens against the glass, there would still be a lot of glass to lens reflections and flare with resulting bad ghosting.
It would be even worse than if you used very low quality UV filter on your lens.
Student
where were you when you took this?

Right after entering the roof of the Sky Deck there is a recessed platform to the right for better observation.
Right near that platform but not descending there is where I took the shot.
Amazing photos,
