That Heian Shrine garden photo is beautiful. Love the crystal-clear reflection.

Sakura season is beautiful, but it's as busy as busy can be! If you have the choice, aim a little late in the season; the crowds will have subsided, and the blossoms still look good even as they're falling

Thanks for the information. I'm planning about 7 to 8 days for Kyoto visit. Do you think that is sufficient to cover most of the famous place?

Yeah, seven to eight days sounds good for the main places in Kyoto. If you want to visit some of the surrounding places, like Osaka, Nara, Koya-san etc., you might need some more time.

But for Kyoto city itself, a week sounds like a good plan.

By the way, a really good website for trip planning is http://www.japan-guide.com/ They have really good information on cherry blossoms, national holidays and festivals.

Thanks for sharing! My plan is to spend a week or so in Kyoto. After which I intend to visit Todaiji Temple in Nara in a day before I head to Tokyo for 2 or 3 days.

I like Hokkaido, but maybe that will be another year. Else I will plan for Kyoto followed by Hokkaido for 2 weeks.

          Thanks for the nice website.

I spent 3 days in Kyoto this week and covered all the top attractions so 7-8 days will really let you enjoy the local color by wandering around. The most important thing is learning which buses will get you to the temples and the tourist desk in the Kyoto station is invaluable. They sell the all day $5 bus passes and have maps showing you which buses go where. You'll find that one bus covers several attractions on a route so spend some time planning out you routes.
